Yesterday I had my first at-home workout due to the social distancing of COVID-19, which resulted in the closing of all gyms in NYC. I exercised in the living room with two containers of water and a resistance band. I will discuss what exercises I did and how it went, but first, I start by saying that I was in total shock that I even attempted it.
When it comes to home workouts, I'm not such a fan of it. I enjoy the gym atmosphere and almost everything that comes with it. I enjoy seeing other people workout and go hard. I enjoy seeing people sweat. I enjoy seeing people care about their health. In my opinion, just going to the gym is caring about your health. I enjoy seeing free weights, machines, treadmills, stair masters, and barbells. I feel like I get the best workouts at the gym. Whenever I hear someone say I worked out at home, I automatically think to myself, "YOU DIDN'T WORKOUT." I feel like you're very limited when you exercise at home. You don't have as much, and there are many distractions around you. You have your bed where you can go lay down and be lazy. Grab something to eat from the kitchen or relax and watch tv on the couch. So, for that reason, I don't believe much in an at-home workout because people either don't get it done or don't push themselves as hard. I'm sure some people disagree, but that's just my opinion.
Now I will agree that people get distracted even at the gym, but there is less for them to do. When you go to the gym, it's either workout or goes home. Sometimes the real exercise is just making it to the gym. I'm sure many people go back and forth in their heads asking themselves, should they go to the gym or go home? I do too. It's just apart of the process because we know how hard it is to work out. You start saying it's not worth it, or instead go home because your tired from working all day.
What I've done in the past is control how I think. That alone is hard, but it works. What also helps is bringing my gym clothes with me to work and going to a gym that is nearby. So if you struggle with that, I hope those few tips help. Also, if possible, bring a friend that you can trust.
Now back to my at-home workout. You would think because I'm a trainer that I would have it more comfortable and yes I would agree with you that I do. Coming up with exercises is a part of my job, so that part wasn't difficult. I know many people at home probably don't know what exercises they can do, so they probably feel stuck. There are a good few exercises that can be done, and the pro and cons are that you don't need any gym equipment. When I started, I push the table to the side and started the program that I created. Before I share, I started my workout with a jog from my home to prospect park. Prospect Park is 15 mins away from where I jog from, and once I got there, I went on for about 5 mins and power walked. Once I got back home, this is what I perform.
I hope after reading this, you take action and give my workout program a try. As you probably already heard a thousand times that this is a difficult time, and it's best to look at this in a positive light. We are all stuck at home, so let's make the best of it and work with what we have. I hope my article finds you well and that you and your family are in good health.
